Why some people hurt their own skin

When we see marks on someone's skin, the first response is usually fear, and the first story is suicide. Psychologically the two are not the same. For many people whose inner pain has gone past capacity, cutting is an extreme way of staying alive. The skin is broken not to end a life, but to force a reboot before the mind comes apart.

Severe overload can produce a numbness in which reality thins and the person feels themselves disappearing. Sharp physical pain then becomes a coordinate. It pulls scattered awareness back into the body and confirms, in a blank field, that they still exist. It is a tragic form of self-rescue: pain that can be steered used against a storm that cannot.

People who self-harm often lack a working translation system for feeling. When grief, shame or self-attack cannot become language, the body is the last exit. The marks are a visualisation of a pain that would not speak. Blood that can be seen, dressed, and later scab is, for some, more bearable than a pressure that has no shape.

The least useful response from someone nearby is fear dressed as blame: why would you do this to yourself; how can you do this to the people who love you. Those sentences add shame and drive the marks further out of sight. Isolation is usually already in the room. A moral verdict cuts the last straw that was reaching outward.

Calmer, honest attention works better. You can say: I can see you are hurt. Has too much been collecting lately that you cannot process? Move the focus from the wound to the feeling that made the wound necessary. That is a way of saying you understand this is currently the only survival method they know.

You do not first have to take the blade away. You first help build something that can hold the pain. When feeling starts to be received, reliance on physical pain often loosens. It is slow work. Presence matters more than a single prohibition. The marks are traces of a soul trying to stay. If you are inside this loop, the body has been carrying weight that was never only its job. Finding another exit is shared work, not a private failure.
