Why a close friend's success can quietly unsettle you

Blessing a stranger is easy. Looking straight at a close friend's sudden light is harder. That is not wickedness. It is relative deprivation. When the person you used to complain with gets the role, the rise, the apparently easy love, the first feeling may be loss, even a thread of envy, and then a wash of shame: how can I feel this about a friend?
Drop the moral trial. Envy needs closeness. We do not envy a billionaire on another planet of comparison. A peer's rise breaks a balance you had not named, and shows you a want that has not been met.
Envy is not a crime. It is a compass. It points at what you want and have not dared to chase. Do not rush to hide it. Follow it down: which fear of your own lack did their success touch?
