Shrinking yourself until you almost disappear

Most of us have tried to take up less room. Sometimes you want to be almost transparent, so that no one notices. Unseen, you cannot be criticised. Unmoved, you cannot be laughed at. Around you there are always people who say, lightly, that you cannot do it, and who cool the thing you care about. Heard often enough, you start to agree. You hide in the shade of being safe, and hypnotise yourself with I am not enough, it will not be my turn — as if shrinking far enough could purchase safety.
Giving away a life to avoid people who barely matter is a poor trade. Many will walk into your days. Most are passing through. Why let a group that will not stay write the script? What you actually want to say is as important as what they want to say. The life is yours. You are the one who will carry the result and keep the fruit. Walk far enough and the voices that once filled the room become small.
If something in you says this is worth attempting, go. Failing on a road you chose is different from the regret of being frightened off. Confidence is not a gift you wake up owning. It is a craft: the skill of being afraid and moving anyway. It gathers in the hours when you are unsure and still take the step. It is not a destination. It is the callus that forms under a direction you believe in.
You do not need everyone's approval. You need to remain answerable to the honest self.
