'It is all for the best': comfort that talks down to you

Don't be unhappy; everything happens for a reason. The sentence poses as insight. In a person who is already helpless it often lands as a second injury.

Cause and purpose are not the same. A cold after a weak week, a poor mark after no revision — that is ordinary cause. Said over an illness, an accident, sexual violence or a death, the same sentence is not analysis. It is a purpose forced onto a wreck.

Behind it sits a tidy determinism. The misfortune is filed as fate, a lesson, a higher drill, as if the destruction were the price of a later rebirth. That does not console. It justifies the pain, and hints that if you do not grow from it you have wasted a gift.

Refuse the plot that says a person must be wounded in order to become whole. Asking someone still in the drop to thank the thing that pushed them is not kindness. It is a use of their pain.

The speaker is often managing their own fear of a random world. They need your suffering to have a script so that their world stays ordered. The rush to find meaning is a way of soothing their own helplessness in front of yours.

If you have no sentence, silence, or an honest I do not know what to say, is more decent than an explanation of fate. I am sorry that happened to you admits the fact. It treats the pain as real and unearned, instead of covering it with a false meaning. Empathy is the courage to look at the drop, not a shout from the cliff that this was for the best.
