Hot-and-cold love and the slot-machine effect

What you cannot leave is often not how good they are. It is the randomness with which the warmth arrives. Hot, then gone. The mind knows it should walk and the body stays as if hooked. Psychology calls this intermittent reinforcement.

Dopamine peaks not at the reward, but in the long wait when a reward might come and the timing cannot be read. When someone's love drops like a slot machine, the brain is hijacked. The swing gets misread as a deep soul tie. It is closer to a calculated chemical addiction.

The first break in the loop is to admit the dependence. The longing that keeps you up is often a neurotransmitter running hot, not a unique destiny. Love that can be lived in is steadier and more predictable. It does not keep you in a daily panic of being dropped.
